Lang and socialism : a study in the great depression

The Great Depression is a significant but neglected period in Australian history. This book describes the formation within the New South Wales Labor Party of a mass- organised ginger group, known as the Socialisation Units, which tried to convert the Party to 'socialism in our time'. The group became so strong that it was in effect a party within the Party. At the 1931 Easter Conference it succeeded in committing the Labor Party to a positive policy of socialism. Although the decision was later revised, it remains unique in the history of Australian Labor Parties.

Studies in the eighteenth century III : papers presented at the Third David Nichol Smith Memorial Seminar, Canberra 1973

This volume of essays, from the Third David Nichol Smith Memorial Seminar, continues the valuable and lively tradition established in the two earlier seminars and volumes. The essays, by distinguished international scholars, range over many of the topics that make the eighteenth century a rich area of study: the burgeoning of ideas about man and his place in the world, social history, philosophy and literature, literary criticism and traditions, the poetry and prose of the giants of the age. For all students of eighteenth-century studies this book will be vital reading.

State-municipal fiscal relations : a comparative study of Australia and India

This is a comparative study of State-municipal fiscal relations, with particular reference to New South Wales in Australia and West Bengal in India. After outlining the broad structural features of municipal authorities and the framework of State- municipal transfer arrangements, the study con centrates on the operative aspects of intergovern mental fiscal relations in a sub-national context. The results of the study indicate commonalities as well as differences in the transfer arrangements, including the role of federal institutions in financing municipal government.

Fascism, anti-Fascism and Italians in Australia, 1922-1945

Although Italians had migrated to Australia since the middle of the nineteenth century, it was not until the 1920s that they became aware that they were a community in a foreign land, not just isolated individuals in search of fortune. Their political, cultural, economic and recreational associations became an important factor. Many of them, although settled in Australia, still thought of themselves as an appendage of Italy, a belief strengthened by Fascism's nationalist propaganda which urged them to reject alien cultures, customs and traditions.

Opposition in a dominant-party system : a study of the Jan Sangh, the Praja Socialist Party, and the Socialist Party in Uttar Pradesh, India

In countries in which one political party is dominant, attention naturally centers on that party. This book is unusual because it concentrates on what were until recently the largest opposition parties in the largest Indian state. It deals with such questions as: What problems are involved in building an opposition party in a dominant-party system, particularly in a newly independent underdeveloped country? What effects do opposition parties experience when the dominant party is identified with the winning of national independence?

Raw materials and Pacific economic integration

The major focus of this volume is trade in raw materials, which is the basis for trade between Australia and Japan and, indeed, for the economic relations within the Western Pacific region. While dominance of world markets for raw materials is generally understood in Western Europe and North America, it is not yet appreciated in either country just how fundamental are her relations with her nearest neighbours in supplying the country's resource requirements.

Studies in the eighteenth century [v.] 2 : papers presented at the second David Nichol Smith Memorial Seminar Canberra 1970

This volume presents an array of studies on many aspects of the eighteenth century: on the novel, history, the history of ideas, drama, poetry and sentimentality. The essays are as diverse as 'Pope's Essay on Man and the French Enlightenment' and 'Of Silk-worms and Farthingales and the Will of God'. One group is concerned with the works and ideas of Bayle, Alexander Gerard, Diderot, Fuseli, Hawkesworth and Swift among others.
