Publication subsidy fund

ANU provides publication subsidies for eligible authors whose work has been accepted for publication by ANU Press.

Subsidies are awarded by the Publication Subsidy Committee, which is chaired by ANU University Librarian Roxanne Missingham. The Committee meets three times a year to consider the applications. ANU Press administers the Publication Subsidy Fund and provides secretariat services to the Committee.

In evaluating applications, in addition to the criterion set out under ‘Purpose’ below, the Committee will take the quality of the work into account, as assessed by referees or by other means.

The Committee may give preference to early career researchers.

Applications for the second round of the Publication Subsidy Fund close 28 August 2023.

Purpose

The ANU Vice-Chancellor allocates funds to assist with the publication of academic research of staff members of the University by ANU Press on the basis of the University’s commitment to scholarly publishing.

Applications are called three times a year, and the maximum amount for any one subsidy is $3,000. Each subsidy is discrete: no long-standing commitment will be made towards the costs of ongoing publications such as journals or other series. Typical activities funded include copyediting and indexing.

The publication subsidy will not be approved for commissioning cover designs, as ANU Press includes publication cover design as part of its publishing process. Applications for funds to assist with marketing or book launch costs will also not be considered. Translations of works into or from English are unlikely to be supported unless they are of exceptional literary or scholarly merit.

Eligibility

All staff members of the University publishing their work through ANU Press may apply. The application must relate to a completed piece of work conducted while at the University and negotiations with ANU Press must be at an advanced stage. Applicants who are seeking to publish a revised PhD thesis through ANU Press, where the majority of the work for the PhD was undertaken at the ANU, are eligible to apply for the subsidy. Visiting fellows are eligible to apply for the subsidy; Alumni are not eligible for the subsidy. Subsidies will only be allocated to works that have undergone evaluation by the relevant Editorial Board, been successfully taken through the rigorous peer-review process and accepted by ANU Press for publication.

Conditions

Successful applicants must enter into an arrangement with the University concerning such matters as acknowledgement of the University’s assistance in the work and the provision of a copy of the published work to the Governance Office. The subsidy will lapse 12 months from the date of approval by the Committee and any unclaimed funds will be reallocated in the next round. If the work has not been published within 12 months, the applicant will have to reapply for a new subsidy.

The work must be published by ANU Press. Applications for funds to assist with publications costs through another publisher will not be considered. If an author is awarded the subsidy and withdraws their work from publication with ANU Press, the author will be required to reimburse any funds received.

Application process

Please download and fill out the Application Form (PDF, 0.2 MB) and send it to ANU Press along with the following documentation:

  • Quotes from copyeditors/indexers for the relevant work being carried out.
  • Information on other sources of funding (e.g. ARC grants, financial support by other institutions).
  • Table of contents – including names of authors and their affiliation.
  • Signed contracts from all leading authors/editors.
  • Other relevant documents.

ANU Press will also need to have copies of the following, which should have been provided at any earlier stage of the book proposal process:

  • Completed Book Proposal Form (filled out by the lead author/editor).
  • Completed Proposal Evaluation Form, signed by the chair of the relevant Editorial Board.
  • Two peer-review reports recommending publication of the proposal by ANU Press.

Your book must have already undergone the peer-review process and be approved for publication by the Editorial Board to be considered for a subsidy.

Note that the number of subsidies granted each year is limited. Applications that demonstrate that, without the subsidy, crucial publishing components such as copyediting may not be able to be undertaken will be given priority.
