Launch of ANU Historical Journal II

After 32 years the ANU Historical Journal (196487) is returning in a second iteration. Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, the first issue of the revived ANUHJ brings together the writing and research of several generations of Australian historians in a single volume. Together, the 21 contributors explore a wide range of historical topics, from the changing meanings of barn swallows in the European Bronze Age to the history of history at the ANU.

Book Launch: The Court as Archive

Book Launch: A New Rival State

Professor Frank Bongiorno AM of the ANU School of History will launch the new book A New Rival State? Australia in Tsarist Diplomatic Communications, followed by Emeritus Professor Richard Rigby and Dr Elena Govor.

This book is a unique collection of dispatches written in 1857–1917 by the Russian consuls in Melbourne.

Can people learn to drink differently? There can be no argument that the level of harm from alcohol in Australia is too high and that some communities are disproportionately affected. In her book Teaching ‘Proper’ Drinking?, Dr Maggie Brady examines two historical approaches undertaken with Aboriginal people that sought to minimise this harm by teaching people to drink in a ‘civilised’ manner.
