2020 Prize to assist with publication of a CASS PhD thesis

The CASS Humanities & Creative Arts ANU Press Editorial Board is offering a prize valued at $3,000 for the best completed and passed PhD thesis submitted in CASS since 2016. The prize money will be used to meet expenses associated with having the manuscript professionally copyedited prior to publication through ANU Press, and will be paid directly to the copyeditor (no money will be paid to the prizewinner).

ANU Press is a globally recognised leader in open-access academic publishing. The Press produces fully peer-reviewed monographs and journals across a wide range of subject areas, with a special focus on Australian and international policy, Indigenous studies and the Asia–Pacific region.

The following books are from previous prize winners:

In 2019, the Press had published more than 860 titles, with over 3.4 million downloads for the year. Publishing with ANU Press offers an excellent opportunity to raise your local and international profile.

Eligibility: Any PhD thesis from a postgraduate student registered with an academic location within the College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS) that has been passed since 1 January 2016. (Theses completed within other Colleges are not eligible.)

Nomination for the prize: Nominations will be through the Head of the relevant academic location within CASS. Each location may nominate up to two theses. The nomination should be accompanied by (a) the complete original examiners’ reports; (b) a one-page statement from the student responding to their examiners’ reports and outlining how they plan to convert the thesis into a book which would attract a wider readership; (c) a one-page statement from the Head of location in support of the nomination. There are no forms for the nomination.

Timeframe: The closing date for nominations is 15 June 2020. A decision will be made within 2 weeks. There is an absolute deadline for returning the finalised manuscript by the 30th October 2020, otherwise the prize will be withdrawn.

Publication form: The manuscript will be published free in electronic form but it will also be available as a print-on-demand hard copy at a little above production cost.

Nominations should be sent via email to Christine Huber, HCA ANU Press
